The back story

About Lantau: the back story

Lantau holds the airport, but also the Big Buddha and Po Lin Monastery at Ngong Ping and the old fishing village of Tai O (HKTB).

The Big Buddha

Ngong Ping 360 climbs from Tung Chung to Ngong Ping; the Big Buddha is 34 metres tall, at the top of 268 steps (np360.com.hk; HKTB).

Tai O

Tai O is one of Hong Kong’s oldest fishing villages, with stilt houses built by Tanka boat people and shops selling preserved fish and shrimp paste; bus 11 from Tung Chung takes about 50 minutes (HKTB).

Take the cable car up and the bus to Tai O.

Our advice: go early on a weekday, and have lunch at the monastery. Temples are places of worship: speak quietly, ask before photographing people at prayer, and follow the signs for incense.
